Glamorgan have a rich history of Pakistani overseas players and everyone at the club is excited to welcome the Pakistan side to take on Eoin Morgan’s exciting 50-over side, which won convincingly against Sri Lanka in the Welsh capital earlier this month.
The Welsh county were blessed with the services of former Pakistan Test captain Javed Miandad for six seasons, from 1980 to 1985, during the Karachi-born batsman’s prime. Miandad, a veteran of 124 Tests – and 8,832 runs – was a fan favourite at Sophia Gardens where he played alongside the likes of Alan Butcher and Hugh Morris. Miandad also filled the void left by Pakistani legend Majid Khan, who featured in Glamorgan’s top order during the 1970s.
More recently Pakistan swing bowler Waqar Younis became an adopted Welshman when his wickets guided Glamorgan to the 1997 County Championship title. In a team famed for its Welsh core – Robert Croft, Steve James, Steve Watkin et al – Waqar led the attack, claiming 68 wickets at 22 runs apiece. Waqar is another former Pakistan captain, who continued Glamorgan’s long-standing association with the proud cricketing country.
