Worcestershire Coach Rhodes Backs Toss Change

8 May 2016 | Cricket
Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes believes the new coin toss regulations brought in for 2016 are working.

New rules in this season's Specsavers County Championship have given the visiting captain the option to bowl first if he wants to – in a move designed to improve pitches around the country.

When asked whether he thought the move has sparked a palpable improvement in pitches, Rhodes said he had noticed a difference.

"I think it has," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester

"If you look back, there have been some very poor wickets - maybe this was the only way they could do it."

"Too many good players were playing forward defensive shots and getting out to average bowlers - that's what was happing before with the wickets.

"Now those bowlers are struggling a little bit - which I think is a good thing."

Away captain Daryl Mitchell opted to have a coin toss in Glamorgan's clash with Worcestershire starting today, as the visitors elected to bat first.
