Glamorgan face Cardiff UCCE in final pre-season warm up

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for Glamorgan’s final pre-season fixture of the season.

The Welsh county face the Cardiff UCCE students in a three-day non-first-class friendly starting tomorrow at Sophia Gardens.

With David Lloyd rested ahead of the opening LV= County Championship match against Durham next week, vice-captain Kiran Carlson will lead the side against his former team.

As well as Carlson, the Glamorgan squad features three other former Cardiff UCCE graduates in Dan Douthwaite, Tom Cullen and Andy Gorvin.

With the tight turnaround between pre-season matches and six LV= County Championship matches in six weeks, several senior players have been rested for the clash with Academy players Harry Friend, Ben Kellaway and Ben Morris have been included in their place.

Friend is a top-order batsman who plays for Newport Cricket Club in the South Wales Premier Cricket League and is currently studying at Cardiff University, while Kellaway is a middle-order batsman and off-spinner for Chepstow Cricket Club and Morris is a fast bowler at Abergavenny Cricket Club.

Swansea born all-rounder Rhodri Lewis is also included in the squad. Lewis is currently on trial at Glamorgan having featured in the recent intra-squad game and has previously played for Berkshire County Cricket Club.

View from the Head Coach – Matt Maynard

“We’re very much looking forward to our final pre-season game against Cardiff UCCE who always give us a good test.

“We’ve got a heavy schedule upcoming, so we’ve rested a few players, but still picked a mixture of experience and youth in this team.

“The likes of Harry Friend, Ben Kellaway and Alex Horton have come into the squad and will learn a lot from the more established players like Callum Taylor, Dan Douthwaite, Tom Cullen and Kiran Carlson who’ll be captaining the team.

“The match gives a great opportunity for those just on the fringe of the squad to get some extra practice in and to put their names up for this round of six championship matches.

“Although it may or may not change our thinking on the Durham game and the squad for Durham, we’re very much looking forward to seeing how these lads go about it and what attitude they show against the students.

“We’re just looking forward to this last outing ahead of a very busy period for the next six weeks when the County Championship returns.”
